The fitness world is buzzing with excitement as a fresh contender enters the competitive fitness arena. This newcomer is set to launch its inaugural season in 2025, bringing a breath of fresh air to the functional fitness community.

What Is the World Fitness Project?

The World Fitness Project is a brand-new fitness league announced in 2024 that aims to transform the landscape of competitive fitness. Created by CrossFit Games veteran Will Moorad, alongside Isabella and Jackson Terry, the WFP offers an alternative to the established CrossFit Games season.

Unlike traditional fitness competitions, the WFP is designed to be inclusive and accessible to athletes of various levels, from beginners to professionals. The fundamental goal is to create more opportunities for athletes to showcase their talents and potentially earn one of the coveted "Pro cards" for the following year.

The project isn't trying to replace existing competitions but rather to complement them, offering athletes more chances to compete professionally throughout the year. With financial backing from the Gillette family, with Beth Gillette (a Masters CrossFit Games athlete and CEO of PowerGrid Services) serving as the registered agent for World Fitness Project, LLC, the WFP has substantial resources to establish itself in the competitive fitness world.

How Does the World Fitness Project Work?

The WFP has taken inspiration from eSports competitions to create its unique format. The season-long competition will feature three key stages that build toward crowning the ultimate champions.

The competition structure includes Tour Events where athletes accumulate points throughout the season. These points help secure their ranking and potentially earn a professional card (PRO Card) for the 2026 season.

The 2025 season will include two three-day Tour events followed by the World Fitness Finals:

  • Tour Event I: Indianapolis, Indiana, USA – May 9-11, 2025

  • Tour Event II: Phoenix-Mesa, Arizona, USA – August 29-31, 2025

  • World Fitness Finals: Copenhagen, Denmark – December 18-21, 2025

Each Tour event will feature six workouts spread across three days, giving athletes multiple opportunities to showcase their skills and earn points toward the Finals.

The Three Divisions: Something for Everyone

One of the most exciting aspects of the World Fitness Project is its inclusive approach, featuring three distinct divisions that cater to athletes of varying abilities:

Pro Division

The Pro division is where you'll find the elite athletes. Twenty male and twenty female athletes will receive professional contracts worth up to $100,000, guaranteeing them automatic invitations to compete in all WFP events throughout the season. These contracts ensure professional-level support for the athletes, allowing them to focus on their training and performance. Athletes in this division earn higher points in events compared to the Challenger division.

Challenger Division

For those aspiring to reach the Pro level, the Challenger division offers a pathway. Athletes can qualify for this division through an online competition lasting one week and consisting of three workouts (WODs). The top 10 men and women from these qualifiers earn the opportunity to compete alongside the pros in the Tour events, potentially making a name for themselves on the big stage.

Competitors Division

This division opens up the competition to even more participants, including team events and age-group categories. The Competitors division includes Elite, Intermediate, and Scaled team competitions, as well as teen couples categories for different age groups.

The Athletes: Star-Studded Lineup

The WFP has already attracted an impressive roster of athletes for its inaugural season. Some of the biggest names in functional fitness have signed contracts for the Pro division, including Justin Medeiros, Haley Adams, Ricky Garard, Danielle Brandon, Pat Vellner, Laura Horvath, and many others.

These athletes represent a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents in the fitness world, ensuring that the competition will be fierce and exciting to watch. With so many recognized names on board, the WFP has already established credibility in its first year.

Why the World Fitness Project Matters

The WFP is poised to make a significant impact on the competitive fitness landscape for several reasons. First, it offers professional-level contracts and support for top athletes, elevating the profession and allowing more competitors to make a living from their sport.

Second, it creates additional opportunities for emerging athletes to showcase their abilities and potentially break into the professional ranks through the Challenger qualifications.

Third, the globally accessible competition format, with events in different countries, helps spread the popularity of competitive fitness to new regions and audiences.

It's worth noting that while many WFP athletes also compete in CrossFit events, the WFP is not affiliated with CrossFit, Inc. and operates independently within the broader realm of functional fitness. This independence allows the WFP to create its own identity and competition structure without being bound by existing frameworks.

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter in Fitness Competition

As the fitness world counts down to the first WFP event in May 2025, expectations are high for this innovative league. With its professional contracts, inclusive divisions, and global ambitions, the World Fitness Project represents a new chapter in competitive fitness.

For fans of functional fitness, the WFP offers more opportunities to watch their favorite athletes compete at the highest level. For athletes, it provides new pathways to professional careers and recognition. And for the fitness industry as a whole, it brings fresh energy and innovation to a rapidly evolving sport.

Whether you're a dedicated fitness enthusiast or simply curious about this emerging competition, the World Fitness Project is definitely something to watch in 2025 and beyond.
